Purpose: This fellowship provides a monthly stipend and free tuition for an American or Canadian graduate student to study at the École Nationale des Chartes in Paris for a period of three months in the fall of 2006. The École des Chartes is the oldest institution in Europe specializing in the archival sciences, including paleography, bibliography, textual editing, and the history of the book. Applicants should explain how taking classes at the École will aid them in their dissertation research. Preference will be given to students from schools supporting the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies. For more information on the École des Chartes see www.enc.sorbonne.fr.
