Purpose: The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies offers up to one-year of research support at the Freie Universitat Berlin. It is open to scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-19th century. The program accepts applications from U.S. and Canadian nationals or permanent residents. Applicants for a dissertation fellowship must be full-time graduate students who have achieved ABD status by the time the proposed rese arch stay in Berlin begins. Also eligible are U.S. and Canadian Ph.D.s who have received their doctorates within the past two calendar years. The Berlin Program is based at, funded and administered by the Freie Universitat Berlin.

Procedure: APPLICATION GUIDELINES: Write a research proposal that should contain all the key elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for the committee to evaluate the proposed study. The writing should be coherent, clear and compelling. Regardless of your discipline, research area and the methodology you choose, all research proposals should include the following information: An explicit statement of the major questions you will ask or hypotheses you will test, Importance of the research to disciplinary concerns, An explicit description and justification of your research methods, Availability and quality of data, Preliminary research already completed or plans for research prior to going overseas, Proposed location(s) for research and explanation of why your project requires overseas research and why Berlin is of particular significance for your project, Bibliography listing most important topical sources. The proposal must be printed on letter size (8.5x11) or A4 paper, double-spaced, with your name written in the boxes in the upper right corner of each page. Please do not use typefaces in a size below 10-point when printing your proposal. Proposals may not exceed 10 pages in length. The bibliography may be one to two pages, i.e. a maximum of 12 pages. Other Criteria: Applicants for a dissertation fellowship must be full-time graduate students, must have completed all coursework required for a Ph.D. and must have achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status by the time the proposed research stay in Berlin begins. Al
